ptech.pngPowerTech is an international competition for young design engineers held since 1999 by the National Taiwan Normal University in Taipei, Taiwan.

The main goal of PowerTech is to develop children's scientific and technical creativity. According to the rules of the competition, teams of up to 4 young engineers are to assemble 3 electromechanical models from identical sets of parts distributed to participants before the competition. The electromechanical part of the models must ensure its movement in one of the following ways: multiple supports, oscillation, rotating wheels or crawling. The solution to these problems is designed to help schoolchildren understand the mechanics of structures and design a working robotic mechanism.

Since PowerTech was founded in 1999, we became reliant on smartphones, microscopic robots, AI, Wi-Fi, 4G and sometimes even 5G networks. In the meantime, PowerTech participants still have create the functioning mechanisms using hacksaws, pliers, screwdrivers and glue. However the main part is that this environment makes children think, create and compete. Moreover, to fulfill the contest requirements for these models, the engineers need the knowledge very few schools can give. After all, solving textbook problems does not mean success in building tangible technical mechanisms.

Traditionally, Taiwan hosts the PowerTech for teams coming from Indonesia, Japan, South Korea, India, China and Hong Kong. In 2018, young engineers from Russia also joined the contest and have been its integral part ever since.

Participation in PowerTech presents an excellent opportunity to reveal children’s abilities in the field of scientific and technical creativity, as well as to prove that technical solutions do not have to be complex to be important, new and interesting.
