State Academic Bolshoi Theatre of Russia (or Bolshoi Theatre of Russia) is one of the largest and oldest opera and ballet theaters in Russia and one of the most significant in the world. Located in the center of Moscow, on Theatre Square. The seating capacity is 1740 spectators.
Founded in 1776 by the empress Catherine the Great, however due to a number of fires the modern building of the Bolshoi Theatre was finished only in 1856.
The Bolshoi Theatre became the first professional stage of Pyotr Tchaikovsky and thus in 1877 became the main stage for his “Swan Lake”, the most prominent ballet in the world to this date.
