Saint Isaac's Cathedral

isaac.jpgSt. Isaac's Cathedral can rightfully be considered a symbol of St. Petersburg. It is the largest Orthodox church in the city, located on St. Isaac's Square.

The history of the Cathedral dates back to 1710 when the soon-to-be first emperor of Russia, Peter the Great ordered to build a wooden church in the name of his patron, St. Isaac of Dalmatia. It was rebuilt several times and the modern building by the design of Auguste de Montferrand of the Cathedral was completed in 1858 after 40 years of construction.

It is more than 100 meters high, 110 meters long and 97 meters wide with the dome diameter of almost 26 meters. The artistic decoration of the cathedral includes more than 150 Russian monumental paintings of the mid-19th century being a reason why the Cathedral was turned into a museum in 1931.
