Siberian tiger

tiger.jpgThe Siberian tiger (Panthera tigris tigris) is a large solitary predator inhabiting the north-eastern regions of Eurasia and one of the symbols of Russia. This tiger subspecies population size is slowly restoring, from approximately 50 in the mid-20th century to 750 individuals nowadays. The Siberian tiger is also sometimes called Amur tiger because of the geographical habitat (which is the region surrounding the Amur river) and is considered one of the rarest predators on the planet.

The Amur tiger bioligically is the largest tiger on the planet and the only tiger that can live in snow at a temperature of -40° C: its weight can exceed 300 kg, the body length varies from 160 to 290 cm, the tail is 110 cm. It is depicted on the flag and coat of arms of Primorsky Territory of Russia, as well as on many heraldic symbols of cities and districts of the region.

This subspecies of tiger has extremely high endurance and vigor, being able to drag a horse carcass for more than 500 meters as well as to reach up to 80 km/h speed in the snow.
